Coaches Corner

Jaco Ford

My journey into CrossFit began as a passionate sports enthusiast, deeply involved in various physical fitness activities. A pivotal moment came when a friend invited me to join a CrossFit class at CrossFit Urban Shack Randburg. From the very first encounter, I was captivated by the vibrant atmosphere, boundless energy, and the sense of community at the Box. As I braved through that initial workout – an experience that felt like a monumental challenge – I began to appreciate the multifaceted ways in which CrossFit could test and enhance one’s physical and mental capacities, ultimately enriching every facet of life.

“Embrace the Uncomfortable” My coaching philosophy revolves around the idea of embracing discomfort. I believe in pushing oneself to the limits during every training session, consistently striving for personal growth. Remember, every challenge, no matter how arduous, can be a source of pure joy when approached with the right mindset.

Sive Mazwi

Before discovering CrossFit, I pursued a dream of becoming a professional football player. Throughout my high school years, I dedicated my time to competing in athletics at district and provincial levels. Whether it was on the track or the soccer field, I was always in motion.

My journey into CrossFit began with a simple goal: to enhance my fitness and strength for soccer. With little knowledge of traditional gym workouts, I ventured into CrossFit and landed at Urban Shack Randburg. The coach there welcomed me with enthusiasm as I shared my goals.

Contrary to many CrossFit initiation stories, my first class felt surprisingly easy, featuring movements I was familiar with from my solo training. This initial confidence was soon shattered during my second class, revealing the gaps in my fitness. That’s when I realized I needed to return and work on these weaknesses, and that’s how I became hooked on CrossFit.

Throughout my athletic and soccer career, I always valued coaches who explained the “why” behind our training. CrossFit mirrored this approach. The coaches at Urban Shack consistently communicated the purpose behind each workout, which resonated with me. What stood out the most was the never-ending quest for improvement; there was always room to refine a movement or exercise.

My football aspirations took an unexpected turn, and letting go of that dream was a challenging mental and emotional journey. The support and community at Urban Shack Randburg played a crucial role during this difficult period. Even on my toughest days, stepping into the Box rejuvenated my spirit. The coaches and members showed genuine care, and their love became a source of strength.

When the opportunity arose to shadow the coaches, it was an easy decision. I wanted to give back to the community that had enriched my life. Becoming a coach felt like a natural progression, a way to impact others positively, just as I had been supported. CrossFit and coaching at Urban Shack Randburg provided a platform to contribute to people’s lives in a meaningful way, both athletically and personally.

In my coaching journey, I’ve come to recognize that our mental strength often serves as the primary barrier to unlocking our true potential. Before we even test our physical capabilities, we impose mental limits on ourselves. My coaching approach is dedicated to not only improving movement but, more importantly, helping individuals shatter these self-imposed mental boundaries.

I firmly believe that we possess untapped reservoirs of capability beyond what we perceive. The key lies in conquering the mental hurdles we set for ourselves. Our training methodology and coaching techniques are specifically designed to facilitate this transformation. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness individuals accomplishing feats they never believed possible, often without even realizing it until they’ve achieved it. That’s what truly fuels my passion for coaching.

Armand Verschuur

My name is Armand Verschuur, I am 32 years old and originally from Cape Town.
I am married to my best friend and partner, Celeste.
I am a co-owner at Urban Shack and owner of Aloe Group of Companies.
I am a serial entrepreneur, biohacker, neo-stoic and polymath.
I am passionate about wellbeing and the roll exercise plays in it.
I believe that reaching our highest potential (mind, body and spirit) is our duty and responsibility, to God, ourselves and humankind.

We started training at Urban Shack to supplement our marathon running, but quickly found the training methodology, atmosphere and comradery superior to anything we’ve tried before, in fact, we enjoyed it so much, we had to become a part of it..

My experience as martial arts instructor and competitive powerlifter made me aware of the amazing potential we all possess, and I feel honored and excited to be a part of the development and wellbeing of everyone at the Shack.

“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
– Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

“I’ve seen an Agent punch through a concrete wall. Men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing but air. Yet their strength and their speed are still based in a world that is built on rules. Because of that, they will never be as strong or as fast as you can be.”
– Morpheus, The Matrix

Celeste Verschuur

My friends call me “Cellie”. I am a co-owner of Urban Shack Randburg and I’m married to the most amazing human being ever, Armand Verschuur. (read more about him next 😉

Interesting facts about me…my hair is always changing. I am a Pisces. I can speak 3 languages (adequately). I laugh at my own jokes and I believe in unicorns. Now for the stuff you actually wanted to know 

Human beings and their potential have always fascinated me. My passion has always been to teach children how to discover and develop this potential. I spent three and a half years at a performing arts school in Cape Town where I studied dance (Ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, ballroom and Zumba) as well as musical theatre. I also gave vocal and drama training to primary school children during this time. My dream for Urban Shack is to help develop it into a space where people can come to learn skills and develop themselves into their fullest potential in every single aspect of life. To guide people of all ages to becoming the best version of themselves.

“Strive to be the best ‘you’ you can be…unless you can be a unicorn, then always be a unicorn!”
